How to permanently remove black mold in my Deira closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall in our Deira apartment. I’m worried it’s spreading because the AC vent is right above it and there’s always a bit of condensation on the windows in the morning. What’s the most effective way to clean this and stop it from coming back for good?

Black mold in a Deira apartment closet is a common issue, driven by Dubai's high humidity and the constant cooling cycle of AC units. The condensation on your windows and the AC vent's location strongly suggest high relative humidity and a possible temperature differential on that wall, creating the perfect environment for mold.

For immediate cleaning of a small area, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the spots with a mixture of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning solution, not just bleach, which often only removes the surface color. Allow the area to dry completely.

However, permanent removal requires addressing the moisture source. The condensation points to elevated indoor humidity. Ensure your AC is set to a consistent temperature, ideally between 22-24°C, and that the unit is not undersized for the room. Run the AC's dry mode frequently to remove ambient moisture. Improve air circulation in the closet by not overpacking it and leaving the door ajar periodically. A small disposable desiccant dehumidifier placed inside can help control moisture in that enclosed space.

For a recurring problem near an AC vent, the issue may be a poorly insulated duct causing condensation or a clogged drain line. This requires a professional HVAC inspection. If the mold returns after your cleaning or covers more than about one square foot, a professional assessment is advised to identify the exact species and the root moisture cause, as underlying wall condensation often needs technical intervention.
