bleach didn't work; call a pro for recurring bathroom mold?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom's ceiling has had a patch of black mold in the corner since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. I tried wiping it with bleach, but it just came back darker. I live in an older building in Deira and I'm worried the ventilation isn't good enough. Should I keep trying DIY solutions or is it time to call a professional cleaning company?

Recurring mold after bleach treatment indicates a deeper issue, typically excess moisture within the building materials. Bleach only removes surface discoloration; it doesn't address the root cause or kill the fungal roots (hyphae) penetrating porous surfaces like ceiling plaster or paint.

In older Deira buildings, this is a common challenge. Inadequate ventilation combined with Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use creates persistent condensation, especially in bathrooms. The moisture gets trapped behind walls and ceilings, fueling regrowth. The key is to identify and rectify the source of the dampness.

For a patch that has returned darker, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters to locate the trapped humidity and thermal cameras to find hidden cold spots where condensation forms. The remediation process involves proper containment, removing the affected porous material, treating the area with specialized antimicrobials, and ensuring the space is dried to a specific moisture content before repainting.

To prevent recurrence, run your bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and ensure it vents outside, not just into the ceiling void. Wiping down wet surfaces and keeping the door open to improve air circulation can also help measurably reduce humidity levels. If the building's ventilation system is fundamentally insufficient, a dehumidifier may be a necessary long-term solution.
