How to clean black bathroom grout and prevent it permanently?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed the grout between the floor tiles in our main bathroom has turned completely black. It's been incredibly humid lately and we're not great about using the exhaust fan. What's the most effective way to clean this and stop it from coming back for good?

The black grout is almost certainly mold, thriving on the humidity and soap scum. Dubai's high humidity, especially now, creates perfect conditions for it to grow deep inside the porous grout.

For cleaning, start with a paste of baking soda and white vinegar or a dedicated grout cleaner. Scrub vigorously with a stiff brush. This removes surface growth but rarely kills the root structure embedded within. If it returns within weeks, the colony is established deep down.

Permanent prevention requires controlling moisture. Run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wipe down wet walls and tiles with a squeegee to remove standing water. Improve air circulation by occasionally leaving the bathroom door open. For villas, ensuring your AC system is properly dehumidifying the entire home is critical; an overworked or undersized unit can leave ambient humidity high.

If the mold returns quickly after cleaning, the issue is likely subsurface. At that point, professional assessment is needed to determine if grout replacement is the only permanent solution. They can also check for hidden leaks or ventilation issues contributing to the problem.
