Should we clean mold behind wardrobe or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our wardrobe in the bedroom has patches of black and green mold. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we moved the furniture to rearrange the room. I’m worried because my husband has started waking up with a stuffy nose. What’s the best way to handle this safely, and should I call a professional company or try to clean it myself first?

The mold behind your wardrobe is likely due to trapped moisture from Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use causing condensation. Your husband's stuffy nose could be related, as mold spores are a common irritant.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Scrub the area with a mixture of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning solution, then dry it thoroughly with a fan. However, given its location behind furniture where the moisture source is hidden, this is a surface fix.

In most Dubai cases like this, a professional inspection is the wiser first step. The visible mold is often just the tip of the iceberg; the real issue is the hidden dampness within the wall. A proper assessment identifies the moisture source—like a leaking pipe, capillary rise from the slab, or condensation from an AC chilled water line—which must be fixed to prevent recurrence. Professionals also use containment and air scrubbers to stop spores from spreading to other rooms during remediation.

Attempting a full removal yourself risks inadequate containment, potentially worsening your indoor air quality. Since the health symptom is already present, a science-led approach with verification testing post-remediation is the most reliable way to ensure the environment is safe.
