How to remove and prevent closet mold from AC leak?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a bit for a couple of weeks, and now I’ve found black spots of mold spreading on the back wall and on some of my shoes. I’ve wiped it down, but I’m worried it will just come back. What’s the best way to treat this properly and prevent it from happening again, especially with our humidity?

The immediate leak is the primary issue that must be fixed first; the mold is a symptom. For a small, visible area, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can be used to wipe down the hard surfaces on the wall. Discard any porous items like the affected shoes, as the mold roots penetrate deeply and cannot be fully removed.
However, wiping alone is a temporary fix. The high humidity in Dubai, especially during summer, creates a perfect environment for rapid regrowth. The moisture from the AC leak has likely seeped into the wall structure and insulation behind, which you cannot see or properly treat yourself. This hidden reservoir of moisture will cause the mold to return. Proper remediation involves three steps: stopping the moisture source (repairing the AC drain line or condensate pan leak), removing the contaminated porous materials if necessary, and thoroughly drying the area with professional-grade air movers and dehumidifiers. For any mold covering more than a few square feet, or if there's a musty odor, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the hidden damage. To prevent recurrence, ensure the AC unit is serviced regularly to prevent future leaks and consider using a standalone dehumidifier or moisture absorber in the closet. Improving air circulation by not overpacking the closet and occasionally leaving the door ajar can also help manage the micro-climate that encourages mold growth. |
