Black mold in bathroom grout - DIY or contact management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black spots spreading in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom. It’s the one without a window in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment, and the smell is really damp, especially after my morning shower. What’s the best way to handle this myself, or should I contact my building management first?

Black mold in bathroom grout is common here due to the high humidity and lack of ventilation, especially in windowless bathrooms like yours in JVC. The damp smell confirms ongoing moisture issues.

For a small, contained area, you can attempt a DIY clean. Wear gloves and a mask. Scrub the grout with a stiff brush and a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated grout cleaner. After cleaning, it is critical to run the bathroom's exhaust fan for at least 30-60 minutes after every shower to remove humidity. A small dehumidifier can also help measurably reduce ambient moisture in an enclosed space.

However, if the staining is widespread, has penetrated deeply, or returns quickly after a thorough cleaning, the moisture problem is likely behind the tiles. This is a structural issue. In a Dubai apartment, your building management is responsible for investigating and remediating the source of the leak or seepage, which is often a failed shower seal or pipe leak. Contact them first with clear photos before attempting a major DIY fix.

A professional inspection with moisture meters can identify the exact source of water intrusion, which DIY methods cannot. If the smell persists or you experience health symptoms, lab testing can identify the mold type.
