Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY clean or call management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a line of black, fuzzy mold spreading along the bottom of the wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. It's on an interior wall, and the room always feels a bit damp even with the AC running. What's the best way to clean this ourselves, or is this a job for the building management to handle?

This is a common issue in Dubai, especially on exterior-facing walls where outdoor heat meets cooled interiors, creating condensation. The wall behind the wardrobe is a high-risk area because airflow is restricted, allowing dampness to accumulate.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt a DIY clean. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Move the wardrobe away to expose the entire affected area. Scrub the mold off with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover. After cleaning, the wall must be thoroughly dried with a fan; simply letting it air dry is often insufficient in our humidity. Crucially, you must identify and address the moisture source. It is likely condensation from the temperature differential, but you must also check for a hidden plumbing leak from adjacent bathrooms.

If the mold returns quickly, covers a large area, or has a musty, penetrating odor, this indicates a deeper issue. In such cases, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the exact moisture source and extent. For tenants in apartments, your first point of contact should be building management. Dubai Law mandates landlords to provide a property fit for habitation, which includes addressing pervasive moisture issues that lead to mold, especially if it's related to building envelope defects or central AC condensation line problems. They are responsible for fixing the root cause, while you may handle the surface cleaning. A professional assessment can often provide the documented evidence needed to formally request remediation from property management.
