How to remove dangerous AC mold myself permanently?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a little onto the carpet for a while, but now I’ve pulled back the corner and found a huge patch of black and green mold on the wall and underlay. I’m worried it’s been there for months, especially with all the humidity. What’s the most effective way to get rid of this for good without having to call in a super expensive professional team?

This is a high-risk situation requiring caution. The combination of prolonged water damage, visible growth, and the UAE's high humidity means the mold has likely penetrated deep into the wall and carpet underlay, making a true "permanent" DIY removal extremely difficult.
Your immediate priority is safety. This is not surface mold you can simply wipe away. The black coloration, especially, warrants caution as it could indicate Stachybotrys or other species that release a high number of irritants and mycotoxins when disturbed. Do not attempt to clean this without proper personal protective equipment: at a minimum, an N95 respirator, nitrile gloves, and protective goggles. Anyone with asthma, allergies, or a compromised immune system should not be in the room. For the carpet and underlay, permanent removal is not possible; they are porous materials and must be cut out, bagged, and disposed of properly. The wall needs to be inspected for moisture penetration. You will likely need to cut away the affected drywall to assess the cavity and framing behind it. All damp or contaminated material must be removed. After removal, the underlying studs and cavity must be HEPA-vacuumed, scrubbed with an EPA-approved fungicidal solution (not just bleach, which doesn't prevent regrowth), and allowed to dry completely before reconstruction. Given the extent you've described, a professional inspection is strongly advised. In Dubai's climate, the AC unit itself is almost certainly contaminated and is constantly resporing the area. A full remediation involves containing the area under negative pressure, using industrial HEPA air scrubbers, and verifying the air quality post-cleanup with lab testing. A certified team can diagnose the AC leak's root cause and ensure the system is decontaminated, which is the only way to prevent rapid recurrence. The initial cost of a proper assessment is often far less than repeated DIY attempts and potential health impacts. |
