AC mold from leak: handyman or mold specialist?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC unit in my bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been leaking a bit, and now I'm seeing these black spots along the bottom of the wall behind the bed. It’s been getting worse since that last big humidity spike a couple of weeks ago. I'm worried about the cost of fixing this – is this a job for a handyman or do I absolutely need to call a specialized mold remediation company to handle it properly?

The wall spots are likely active mold growth from the AC condensate leak and high humidity. This is a common issue in Dubai villas, where constant AC operation and condensation create ideal conditions for mold.
For a small, surface-level patch (under a square foot), a handyman can fix the leak, replace any water-damaged drywall, and clean the area. However, if the staining is spreading, has a musty odor, or is on an interior wall where moisture may be trapped inside, a specialist is necessary. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the full extent of the damage, which is often greater than what's visible. The primary risk with a handyman is incomplete remediation. Simply wiping the visible mold often disturbs spores, spreading them without addressing the moisture source or contaminated wall cavity. This leads to recurrence, often worse than before. A certified mold remediation company will contain the area to prevent cross-contamination, safely remove all affected materials, and use professional-grade air scrubbers. Given the leak is from an AC unit, the internal drip pan and drain line likely also require cleaning to prevent the unit from blowing spores into the room. This is a specialized task. For a proper, lasting solution, a professional inspection is recommended. They can confirm the mold type and provide a scope of work; you can then decide if a portion of the remediation (like the leak repair or final painting) can be handled by a trusted handyman. |
