How to remove black mold from closet walls permanently?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It’s been incredibly humid lately and I’m worried it’s getting worse. What’s the most effective way to get rid of this mold for good without damaging the walls?

The most effective way to permanently remove mold is to address both the visible growth and its underlying moisture source. For a small, contained area like a closet, you can start with a careful DIY approach.
First, identify and stop the moisture. In Dubai's high humidity, closets on exterior walls are prone to condensation from the temperature differential between the air-conditioned room and the hot outside wall. Ensure your AC is running effectively to manage indoor humidity, which should ideally be below 60%. Improve air circulation in the closet by not overpacking it and occasionally leaving the door ajar. For cleaning, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the colour and can damage paint. Instead, use a solution of distilled white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. Scrub the area gently with a soft brush, then wipe it down with a damp cloth and allow it to dry completely. Repainting with a mold-inhibiting primer and paint is crucial to prevent regrowth. However, if the spots are widespread, recurrent despite cleaning, or you notice a musty odor, the issue is likely inside the wall cavity. This is common when the mold is on a partition wall adjacent to a bathroom or kitchen where a hidden pipe leak could be present. In such cases, professional inspection is necessary. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden source, and a lab test can identify the mold type to guide the correct remediation protocol, ensuring it's removed for good. |
