How to permanently remove and prevent recurring wall mold?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the bottom of our bedroom wall that faces the outside. It’s been extra humid lately and I’m worried the problem is coming from inside the wall. What’s the most effective way to remove this for good and what can we do to stop it from coming back next season?

Black spots along an outside wall are often a symptom of condensation, a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant air conditioning. The temperature difference between the cold interior and the hot, humid exterior causes moisture to condense inside the wall, creating the perfect environment for mold growth.
For effective, permanent removal, the source of the moisture must be addressed first. Simply wiping the mold away with bleach or detergent is a temporary fix and will not prevent recurrence. The most effective approach is a multi-step process. First, the mold should be professionally assessed to determine the extent of the growth, especially since you suspect it's inside the wall. A proper inspection, which can include moisture meters and borescope cameras, is crucial. Remediation involves containing the area, safely removing the contaminated materials (like sections of drywall or insulation), and HEPA vacuuming all surfaces. The underlying cause must then be fixed. This often involves improving insulation to prevent the cold bridge effect, sealing any cracks in the exterior wall, and ensuring the room has adequate ventilation to reduce humidity buildup. To prevent it from returning, maintain indoor humidity levels below 60% using dehumidifiers, especially during the more humid winter months. Ensure your AC unit is serviced regularly and is the correct size for the space to effectively remove humidity. Wiping down condensation from windows and cold surfaces daily also helps. For a problem originating from within a wall, a professional assessment is strongly recommended to create a targeted solution. |
