Could black mold from my bathtub be causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks now, and I'm starting to panic. I just pulled back the silicone sealant around our bathtub in our Mirdif villa and found a ton of black mold growing underneath it. It's been extra humid lately and our bathroom window doesn't get opened much. Could this mold be the reason for their coughs, and what's the safest way to get rid of it without making us sick?

Black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum) under silicone sealant can absolutely cause persistent coughing, especially in children. The high humidity in Dubai, combined with condensation from showers and lack of ventilation, creates a perfect environment for it to thrive. When disturbed, these molds release microscopic spores and mycotoxins into the air, which are inhaled and irritate the respiratory system, often manifesting as a chronic cough, congestion, or worsened allergies.
For a small, surface-level patch, you can clean it yourself with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution, but the situation you describe is serious. The mold growing under the sealant indicates a significant moisture problem and deep contamination that DIY cleaning cannot address. Simply scrubbing the surface will release a large number of spores and likely not solve the root issue. The safest approach is a professional inspection and remediation. In the UAE, reputable companies follow standards like the IICRC S520 for mold remediation. They will contain the area to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of your villa, safely remove the contaminated sealant and any affected building materials, treat the area with antimicrobial solutions, and identify the source of moisture to prevent recurrence. Crucially, they can also conduct air quality testing before and after to verify the spore count in your bathroom and living areas has been returned to a safe level. Until you can get it professionally addressed, increase ventilation in the bathroom by running the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and, if possible, opening the window. Keep the bathroom door closed to contain any spores, and consider using a dehumidifier. For your children's coughs, consulting a pediatrician is also advised. |
