How to treat mold and prevent closet dampness in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Arabian Ranches has a persistent damp smell in the master bedroom closet, especially on the outer wall. We had a small leak fixed a few months back, but now that the humidity is rising again, I'm worried the mold is coming back behind the shelves. What's the most effective way to treat this area and what kind of dehumidifier would you recommend for a large walk-in closet to stop it for good?

The damp smell suggests hidden mold is likely, especially after a prior leak. In Dubai's high humidity, mold can regrow quickly if the moisture source and residual spores aren't fully addressed.

For effective treatment, start by removing everything from the closet. Visually inspect the wall, shelving, and especially the baseboard for any discoloration or fuzzy growth. Wipe all surfaces with a diluted white vinegar solution, which can help neutralize mold on non-porous materials. However, if the drywall itself feels soft or the smell is strong, the mold is likely inside the wall cavity. In that case, cutting out and replacing the affected drywall section is the only permanent solution. For a confirmed or suspected serious case, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is recommended to define the full extent behind the wall.

Prevention is critical. A desiccant dehumidifier is ideal for a sealed walk-in closet, as they are more effective than refrigerant models in Dubai's climate and function well at the lower temperatures maintained by AC. Look for a unit with a built-in hygrometer that automatically maintains humidity between 45-55%. Ensure the room's AC vent is not blocked by clothing and is directing air into the space. For villas, checking that the external wall is properly sealed against humid air intrusion is also a key step.
