Is black mold dangerous to clean with bleach ourselves?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of these small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. The strange thing is, our clothes and shoes stored on the floor nearby have started to smell really damp and musty. Is this definitely black mold and how dangerous is it for us to just wipe it down ourselves with bleach?

Black spots in a closet on an interior wall, paired with a damp smell, are classic signs of a mould issue, likely caused by condensation from your AC system. The high humidity in Dubai, especially when cold air from an AC unit meets warmer room air, creates perfect conditions for mould growth on cooler surfaces like interior walls and in closets.
Using bleach is not recommended for porous surfaces like drywall or wood. It only removes the surface colour of the mould, leaving the root structure intact to regrow. More importantly, cleaning it yourself can aerosolize spores, potentially increasing your exposure. For small, isolated areas (under one square meter), a solution of distilled white vinegar or a dedicated mould remover is often more effective at penetrating porous materials. Always wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. However, the musty smell on your clothes indicates a persistent moisture problem that simple wiping won't fix. The mould you see is likely just the visible part of a larger colony, possibly growing within the wall cavity if there's a hidden condensation or minor leakage issue. For your situation, a professional inspection is strongly advised to identify the moisture source. Remediation isn't just about cleaning; it's about fixing the underlying cause to prevent immediate recurrence. A proper assessment will determine the extent and recommend the correct containment and removal procedures to ensure it's handled safely and thoroughly. |
