Is black mold in bedroom dangerous to stay near?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our suitcases. Ever since the last round of heavy fog a few weeks ago, my husband and I have both been waking up with stuffy noses and headaches. I’m starting to get really worried it’s connected.
**How dangerous is this kind of mold for our health and should we get out of the apartment until it's professionally cleaned?**

Black mold is a general term for several species, some of which can produce irritants and toxins. Your symptoms—stuffy noses and headaches after heavy fog—are a common reaction to elevated mold spore levels, especially in a confined space like a closet. It is strongly linked to exacerbating allergies and respiratory irritation.
In Dubai’s climate, this is a frequent issue. The combination of high external humidity, especially during foggy seasons, and cold air from AC units leads to significant condensation in poorly ventilated areas. This creates the damp environment mold needs to grow on organic materials like dust, cardboard, or the wall itself. You should consider a professional inspection for two reasons. First, to identify the species through lab analysis, as this determines the actual health risk and necessary remediation steps. Second, the visible patch is often just the tip of the iceberg; the growth may extend into the wall cavity. For most healthy adults, temporary exposure from a single patch typically doesn’t require immediate evacuation. However, if symptoms are severe or if anyone in the household has asthma, allergies, or a compromised immune system, relocating until it’s addressed is a prudent precaution. The priority is to stop the moisture source, improve ventilation, and have the contaminated materials properly removed and the area treated to prevent recurrence. |
