Is black mold in my wardrobe an urgent issue?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom wardrobe on the outside wall has developed black spots in the corner, and it’s been spreading slowly over the past few weeks. I just pulled out my winter clothes and they smell really damp and musty. We live in an older building in Deira and I'm worried it's getting worse, especially with the humidity. How urgent is it that I get a professional to look at this, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

Black mold in a wardrobe on an outside wall is an urgent indicator of a moisture issue that needs to be addressed. The black spots spreading over weeks and the musty smell on clothes confirm an active problem, likely due to condensation from the temperature difference between your air-conditioned room and the humid exterior wall—a common issue in older Deira buildings.

Using bleach is not recommended. It can remove surface discolouration but does not address the moisture source or kill the mold roots penetrating porous materials like drywall or wood. It can also release harmful spores into the air and leave behind moisture, allowing regrowth.

The urgency comes from the continuous spread, which suggests a persistent dampness that will only worsen, especially with rising humidity. This can lead to structural damage to the building and poses health risks, particularly for anyone with allergies or respiratory sensitivities.

For a situation like this, a professional inspection is advised. They can identify the exact moisture source—whether it's penetrating damp from outside, severe condensation, or even a hidden pipe leak—and assess the extent of the growth within the wall cavity. Proper remediation involves containing the area, removing contaminated materials, and implementing solutions to control humidity and prevent recurrence. You can manage the immediate risk by removing the affected clothes for cleaning and improving air circulation around the wardrobe, but the underlying cause requires a diagnostic assessment.
