Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY bleach or professional treatment?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I suspect it's because of this black, fuzzy stuff I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom, probably from all the humidity. We've lived in this Jumeirah Park villa for 2 years and just noticed it when moving furniture. Is this something I can handle myself with bleach from the supermarket, or is this a job for a professional company? What’s the typical cost to get a room like this professionally treated?

Black mold behind furniture in a Dubai villa is a common issue, especially in humid rooms like bedrooms with year-round AC use. The condensation from cold walls meeting warm, humid air creates a perfect environment for it. For a small patch (less than one square meter), you can attempt DIY with caution.

Do not use bleach. It’s mostly water and can feed the mold deeper into porous materials like drywall. Use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner or a solution of distilled white vinegar. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and address the moisture source—this often means improving room ventilation or identifying a hidden condensation leak.

However, given the location (behind a wardrobe), the extent of growth is likely larger than what’s visible. If it has penetrated the wall or if the area is larger than a square meter, professional assessment is strongly recommended. The persistent cough in your children is a significant indicator that professional inspection and air quality testing are warranted to identify the species and the full scope.

Treatment costs for a single room vary significantly based on the extent of contamination and required remediation steps, from surface cleaning to partial wall replacement. Reputable companies provide a detailed assessment and quote only after an on-site inspection. Look for a provider that uses independent lab analysis to verify the mold type and confirm its removal, as this is the only way to be certain the environment is safe.
