Black mold behind sofa: DIY fix or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our sofa in the living room has these black speckles that just appeared after that really humid spell we had last week. I tried wiping it with a vinegar solution but it came back after a couple of days, and now the whole area has that damp, earthy smell. Am I dealing with something I can fix myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call in a professional for this?

The black speckles and musty smell indicate active mold growth, likely due to trapped moisture from that humid spell. In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue where furniture is placed against exterior walls, as condensation can form when the cold AC wall meets warm, humid air.

Vinegar is a temporary surface fix that often fails because it doesn't address the moisture source or the mold roots penetrating porous materials like drywall or paint. For a small area (under one square meter), a thorough DIY approach can be attempted: move the sofa, wear an N95 mask, scrub the area with a dedicated mold cleaner (not bleach), and ensure the wall is completely dry with a dehumidifier. Crucially, you must identify and fix the moisture source, which could be minor condensation or a more serious leak.

However, the fact it returned so quickly and has a strong odor suggests the mold may be more established within the wall cavity. In such cases, and for any area larger than a square meter, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the extent of the problem behind the wall, which is often far greater than the visible surface spots. Remediation then involves controlled removal of affected materials to prevent cross-contamination. For verification, a post-remediation test from an independent microbiology lab is the only way to confirm the spore count has returned to a safe, ambient level.
