Should we worry about closet black mold and call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It's gotten worse since the weather turned more humid. My husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose and itchy eyes every morning for the past couple of weeks. **Should we be worried about this and is it enough to call a professional, or can we handle it ourselves with bleach?**

Any visible black mold growth, especially with accompanying symptoms like a stuffy nose and itchy eyes, warrants attention. The humid Dubai climate and year-round AC use create ideal conditions for mold, often due to condensation on cold walls or hidden moisture sources.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can attempt cleaning with a detergent solution, not bleach. Bleach doesn't kill mold roots and can worsen indoor air quality. However, given the symptoms and that it's growing on a wall, the moisture source is likely inside the wall cavity—a common issue when exterior walls cool from AC and attract condensation. This means the visible patch is often just the tip of the iceberg.

Professional assessment is strongly recommended here. A certified inspector uses thermal imaging to pinpoint the hidden moisture source and takes air/surface samples for lab analysis to identify the mold species. This is critical, as some types like Stachybotrys (true 'black mold') require more stringent containment during removal. DIY efforts often just spread spores without solving the root problem, leading to rapid regrowth.

In Dubai, remediation companies should adhere to IICRC S520 standards for proper containment and removal. Resolving the underlying moisture issue, such as improving insulation or addressing a leak, is the only permanent solution.
