AC mold in wardrobe causing cough: DIY or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our Jumeirah apartment has been leaking a bit into the wardrobe in the master bedroom for a couple of months. Now there's visible black and green speckles all over the back wall and our clothes, and both my husband and I have had this stubborn dry cough and itchy eyes for weeks that won't go away. What's the safest and fastest way to deal with this ourselves, and at what point do we absolutely need to call a professional?

Stop using the AC supplying that room immediately and address the moisture source—the leak is actively feeding the mold growth. For your health, remove all affected clothing and items from the wardrobe for washing or disposal.

The safest DIY approach is limited to surface cleaning on non-porous materials after the leak is fixed. A solution of diluted white vinegar can help remove visible speckles from the wall. However, given the duration of the leak and your symptoms, the mold has likely penetrated the porous drywall and possibly the insulation behind it. DIY cleaning will only address surface appearance, not the root colony.

You absolutely need a professional inspection. The persistent respiratory symptoms strongly suggest a significant spore count in your bedroom's air. In Dubai's climate, with high humidity and year-round AC use, this situation will not resolve on its own. A proper assessment involves moisture meters to find hidden dampness and air or swab samples sent to a microbiology lab to identify the species, which dictates the remediation protocol. This is crucial for your health, as some species common in AC systems can cause the exact symptoms you describe.

Focus your search on providers who offer detailed diagnostic testing and can explain the science behind their remediation plan, not just those offering a basic clean.
