How to remove mold behind wardrobe and prevent moisture?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe, which is on an exterior wall facing the marina. The AC is always on but the room still feels a bit damp. What's the best way to clean this safely and is there a specific type of dehumidifier or moisture absorber you'd recommend for this climate to stop it from coming back?

The black spots behind your wardrobe are likely mold caused by condensation on that exterior wall. In Dubai's climate, the temperature difference between the air-conditioned interior and the hot, humid exterior creates a perfect environment for moisture buildup and mold growth, especially behind large furniture that restricts airflow.

For safe removal, first move the wardrobe away from the wall. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Light surface mold can often be cleaned with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 4 parts water). Scrub the area gently, let it dry completely, and then dispose of any contaminated rags. However, if the mold has penetrated the paint or drywall, or covers an area larger than one square meter, the surface material may need to be removed and replaced by a professional to prevent spores from spreading.

Preventing its return requires addressing the moisture source. Keep the wardrobe at least two inches away from the wall to allow air to circulate. Ensure your AC is set to a consistently cool temperature, as frequent on/off cycling can increase humidity. A desiccant dehumidifier is highly effective for Dubai's climate; it works better than refrigerant models in our consistently high humidity and can help maintain a relative humidity level below 60%, which inhibits mold growth. For a persistent issue, a professional inspection can identify if there's a leak in the building envelope or if the wall requires additional insulation.
