AC mold in Jumeirah: DIY or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Lakes Towers seems to be blowing out a damp, earthy smell, and I’ve just spotted some black speckles around the vent in the master bedroom. It’s been getting worse since the humidity started rising a few weeks back. I’m handy with a bleach spray, but is this something I should tackle myself, or do I absolutely need to call a professional for a proper mold inspection?

That damp, earthy smell and visible black speckles are classic signs of a mold issue in your AC system, and the rising Dubai humidity is the primary catalyst. While a bleach spray might clean the visible specks on the vent cover, it will not address the mold growing inside the ductwork or on the cooling coils, which is the source of the odor and the recurring problem.
For a small, isolated spot on a vent cover that you can easily wipe away, a DIY approach with a detergent solution can be sufficient. However, if the smell is pervasive and returns after cleaning, the contamination is internal. Attempting a DIY clean on the internal evaporator coil or ducts without proper equipment often just disperses spores throughout your apartment, potentially worsening air quality and your exposure. In a high-rise building like JLT with a centralized cooling system, the problem could also originate in the main air handling unit or ductwork serving multiple units, which is beyond a resident's control and requires building management involvement. A professional inspection is strongly recommended here. They use borescopes to visually confirm internal growth and, most critically, air and surface sampling to identify the mold species. This is essential in Dubai's climate, as certain types of mold commonly found in AC systems due to constant condensation can cause significant irritation and allergic reactions. The lab report from the inspection provides the evidence needed to formally request remediation from your building management if the issue is in the central system, ensuring it is resolved correctly and not just superficially cleaned. |
