Can I clean bedroom closet mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It’s been extra humid the last few months and I'm worried it's spreading behind the clothes. Is this something I can safely clean with a bleach solution myself, or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company in Dubai to check for a bigger problem?

Small, isolated patches of mold on a non-porous surface can often be cleaned with a diluted bleach or white vinegar solution. However, given that this mold is on an interior wall in a humid climate, a DIY cleaning may only address the visible symptom, not the root cause.

The location in a closet on an interior wall is a significant red flag. This suggests the issue is likely excess moisture trapped in an enclosed space with poor air circulation, a common problem in Dubai's climate where AC use creates temperature differentials and condensation. The mold you see is frequently just the tip of the iceberg; it can spread within the wall cavity.

For a small patch, you can cautiously clean it yourself wearing an N95 mask and gloves. Use a mixture of one part bleach to ten parts water, scrub the area, and ensure it is completely dry. But monitor it closely. If it returns within a few weeks—which it often does in such scenarios—the moisture source is still active.

A professional inspection is warranted to identify the hidden moisture source, which could be a small plumbing leak, condensation from an AC duct inside the wall, or rising damp. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to see inside walls without destructive drilling. In Dubai, remediation companies should follow DM and DHA guidelines for proper containment and removal to prevent cross-contamination. The key is not just cleaning the mold but diagnosing and resolving the humidity problem permanently. If the patch is larger than one square meter, or if anyone in the household has respiratory sensitivities, skip the DIY and get a professional assessment.
