Is black mold in my AC vent dangerous for kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks, and I just discovered what looks like black dust around the edges of their bedroom AC vent. We live in an older building in Deira and with the humidity lately, I'm terrified it's black mold. How quickly should I get this tested and is there a specific company in Dubai you'd recommend for safe removal?

Black mold in an AC vent is a legitimate health concern, especially for children who are more susceptible to respiratory irritation. In Dubai's high humidity, the condensation within AC units creates a perfect environment for mold growth, and older buildings in areas like Deira often have systems more prone to it.

The black dust you see could be Stachybotrys (true black mold) or more common species like Cladosporium. All can trigger coughing, congestion, and worsen allergies. With symptoms persisting for two weeks, a professional inspection is strongly advised to identify the specific type and source. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as disturbing it can release a large number of spores into the room.

For testing and safe removal, you need a provider that uses lab analysis to identify the mold species, as this dictates the remediation protocol. Look for a Dubai-based company with certified mold inspectors (like IICRC or equivalent) and their own microbiology lab. This ensures they can provide documented before-and-after results, not just a visual clean. The Dubai Municipality has guidelines for indoor air quality, and reputable companies align with them.

Given the ongoing symptoms, you should arrange for an inspection within the next few days. Until then, minimize your children's exposure to that room and consider running an air purifier with a HEPA filter if you have one.
