Are our health issues from hidden mold in the wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed a huge patch of black mold in the back of the bedroom wardrobe, which is on the wall facing outside. I've been waking up with a stuffy nose and a headache for the past month and my toddler has a persistent cough that won't go away. Is it possible these health issues are being caused by the mold hidden in the closet, and what's the safest way to deal with it without making the spores spread everywhere?

Yes, it is very possible your symptoms are linked to the hidden mold. The persistent stuffy nose, headache, and toddler's cough are classic signs of exposure to mold spores in an indoor environment. The wardrobe, being on an exterior wall, is a prime location for condensation to form due to the temperature difference between your air-conditioned room and Dubai's intense outdoor heat and humidity. This dampness allows mold to thrive unseen.

The safest approach is to avoid disturbing it yourself. Scrubbing or spraying it can aerosolize a high concentration of spores throughout the bedroom, potentially worsening your symptoms. For a patch that large and given the health impacts, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can assess the extent of the growth, identify the mold species, and check for moisture within the wall cavity itself.

Remediation involves containing the area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to prevent spore spread, safely removing the contaminated materials, and using HEPA filtration to clean the air. The critical final step is identifying and rectifying the moisture source—often inadequate insulation in the exterior wall or an internal AC leak—to prevent it from returning. Addressing the root cause is the only permanent solution in this climate.
