Could black mold in closet be spreading inside walls?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom closet on the outside wall has started to smell really damp, and I just found a patch of black spots on the back wall and some of our shoes. It’s been crazy humid lately and we keep the AC running, but it seems to have gotten worse over the past couple of weeks. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated, and could it be spreading inside the walls already?

Yes, it can and likely is spreading inside the walls if you're seeing it on the surface and smelling a persistent damp odour. In Dubai's high humidity, condensation forms on cooler exterior walls, especially behind closets where air circulation is poor. This moisture wicks into the drywall and insulation, creating an ideal hidden environment for mould growth.
This situation is considered urgent. The visible patch indicates an active moisture problem, and the spores will continue to colonise the wall cavity. You need a professional inspection that includes a moisture meter scan of the affected wall to determine the extent of the infestation. They can identify if the issue is condensation or a potential leak. Do not attempt to bleach or scrub it yourself, as this can aerosolise spores and worsen indoor air quality. For a proper assessment, look for a provider that uses borescopes to visually inspect inside wall cavities and provides documented lab analysis of the mould type. This is critical for determining the correct remediation protocol, as some species require more stringent containment procedures. Addressing the root cause, such as improving ventilation or adding a vapour barrier, is the only way to prevent it from returning. |
