How to clean moldy clothes and stop AC leak mold?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom closet has been leaking a little, and I just pulled out a stack of winter clothes to find a bunch of them covered in fuzzy black spots. We’ve lived in this Jumeirah Park villa for years but this is the first time it’s been this bad, probably because of the recent humidity. What’s the best way to clean the clothes and, more importantly, how do I stop the mold from coming back from this AC leak for good?

Immediately wash the moldy clothes with hot water and a heavy-duty detergent. Adding white vinegar or a mold-killing additive to the wash cycle can help. Sun-drying the clothes outside is highly effective, as UV rays are a natural disinfectant. For delicate or heavily contaminated items, a professional dry cleaner experienced with mold is the safest option to avoid ruining the fabric.

The recurring mold is a symptom of the AC leak, not the cause. In Dubai's climate, any persistent moisture from a leaking AC unit will inevitably lead to mold growth inside the ductwork and drip pan. Simply cleaning the clothes without addressing the source will result in the problem returning.

To stop it for good, the AC leak must be repaired by a certified HVAC technician. This is not a DIY job. The system needs to be inspected to identify if the drain line is clogged, the drip pan is cracked, or if there's an issue with the insulation causing condensation. After the repair, a comprehensive duct cleaning and mold remediation of the affected HVAC components is essential to remove the established colony.

For a situation like this in a closet, where spores have likely spread, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the full extent of the growth within the unit and surrounding areas, then perform the remediation with proper containment to prevent cross-contamination. The goal is to fix the water issue and remove the food source for the mold.
