Black mold in AC duct: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Lakes Towers has been making my whole bedroom feel damp, and I keep waking up with a stuffy nose. I pulled the vent cover off and saw what looks like black speckles all over the inside of the duct. Is this something I can clean myself with a spray from the hardware store, or do I need to call a professional company for a proper mold inspection?

Black speckles inside AC ducts in Jumeirah Lakes Towers are a common issue due to the high humidity and year-round AC use, which creates condensation. This is likely a mold colony and attempting a DIY clean with a store-bought spray is not recommended.

Sprays often only bleach the visible surface, leaving the root colony intact to regrow. More critically, disturbing it without proper containment will aerosolize spores throughout your bedroom, worsening your stuffy nose and potential allergic reactions.

A professional inspection is advised. They use borescopes to see deep into the ductwork and, critically, take surface samples for a microbiology lab to identify the species. This is the only way to confirm if it's a common, less hazardous mold like Cladosporium or something more problematic like Stachybotrys (toxic black mold), which dictates the remediation protocol. In Dubai's climate, simply cleaning without fixing the underlying moisture source—often a clogged condensate drain or an AC unit oversized for the space—means the mold will return quickly.

Reputable inspectors provide a detailed report with lab findings and a scope of work, which you can use to verify the necessity and quality of any subsequent cleanup. For your health concerns and to ensure the problem is solved correctly, an assessment is the necessary first step.
