Is black mold urgent to treat or DIY with bleach?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots spreading along the corner of our bedroom wall where the wardrobe is. It's been really humid lately and I'm worried because my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose. How urgently do I need to get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

Black mold in your bedroom is urgent to treat, but not with bleach. The black spots and your husband's symptoms indicate a moisture problem that needs immediate attention, especially given Dubai's high humidity and the condensation that can build up on cold walls behind furniture.

For a small patch (less than one square foot), you can clean it yourself with a vinegar solution or a dedicated mold remover, but bleach only removes the colour and does not address the root cause. The wall must be completely dried afterwards. However, the location behind a wardrobe is a major concern. This suggests a persistent humidity trap or a potential hidden leak in the wall, which DIY cleaning will not fix.

Given the recurring symptoms and the spread, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will identify the exact moisture source—whether it's condensation from your AC, a small leak, or rising damp—and assess the extent of the growth, which is often worse inside the wall cavity. In the UAE, remediation standards require containing the area to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of your home during cleaning, which is not something DIY can achieve.

For verification, a lab test can confirm the mold type, but the presence of visible growth and health symptoms is enough to warrant action. Start by moving the wardrobe away from the wall to improve airflow and reduce local humidity. Then, contact a provider who can offer documented before-and-after testing to confirm the space is truly remediated, not just superficially cleaned.
