Black mold behind sofa causing cough, clean or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past two weeks and I’ve just discovered a bunch of black spots along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. It’s on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Jumeirah. I’m worried it’s from the humidity. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I need to call a professional company to handle it?

The black spots behind your sofa are likely mold, a common issue in Dubai villas due to high humidity and condensation from air conditioning. The wall facing outside is a typical cold spot where moisture condenses, especially when furniture blocks airflow.
For your children's persistent cough, it is advisable to consult a pediatrician to rule out other causes. Mold exposure can indeed cause respiratory irritation, coughing, and worsened allergy symptoms, particularly in children. Do not use bleach. It only removes the surface discoloration and does not address the root moisture problem or kill the mold roots. More importantly, scrubbing it can aerosolize spores, potentially worsening the air quality and your family's exposure. For a small, isolated patch (less than one square meter), you can carefully clean it yourself with a vinegar solution or a dedicated mold cleaner, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, given its location on an exterior wall and the associated health symptoms, this indicates a persistent moisture issue that requires professional diagnosis. A certified mold inspector can identify the exact moisture source—whether it's condensation, a hidden leak, or capillary rising damp—and determine the mold type through lab analysis. This is critical, as some species are more problematic than others. Remediation then focuses on fixing the water intrusion first, containing the area to prevent spore spread, and properly removing the contaminated materials. Simply cleaning the visible growth without solving the moisture problem will result in it returning quickly. Request a company that provides verifiable before-and-after lab results to confirm the issue is resolved. |
