How to clean closet mold and prevent future growth?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little, and now I’ve found a patch of black mold on the back wall and on some of my shoes. I got the leak fixed, but I’m worried the mold will just come back in this humid weather. What’s the best way to clean this properly and what can I do to stop it from happening again?

Clean the affected area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide, not bleach. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. For porous materials like drywall or the shoes, cleaning may not be sufficient; they often need to be removed and discarded to prevent spores from spreading.

The key to permanent prevention is controlling the moisture source. Since the leak is fixed, the remaining risk is condensation from the AC unit's cold air hitting the humid closet environment. Ensure the closet door is left ajar to improve air circulation. If possible, have an HVAC technician check the unit’s condensate drain line and drip pan to ensure they are clear and functioning correctly, as recurring clogs are a common issue here.

For a hidden leak or to confirm the mold is gone, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging can identify residual dampness inside the wall cavity that isn't visible. In Dubai's climate, this step is often necessary as high humidity can cause mold to regrow quickly from any remaining moisture.

To prevent future growth, consider using a small renewable desiccant dehumidifier inside the closet, as this space is especially prone to stagnant, humid air.
