AC mold issue: DIY clean or call a pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit for the last couple of weeks, and now I’ve found a patch of black mold about the size of a dinner plate on the wall behind the unit. I’m worried it’s spreading into the AC ducts themselves. Is this something I can handle myself with cleaning spray from Ace Hardware, or should I just call a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai, and what kind of cost am I looking at for a job like this?

Stop using the AC and address the leak immediately. Given the size of the patch and its location, this is not a DIY job with a store-bought spray.

The high humidity in Dubai provides a constant source of moisture, allowing mold to thrive and potentially spread into the ductwork, which you cannot effectively clean yourself. Spraying surface mold often disturbs spores, pushing them deeper into the wall cavity and AC system, making the problem worse. A professional assessment is needed to determine the extent of the contamination inside the unit and walls.

For a proper remediation, a certified company will contain the area, use HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, remove contaminated porous materials like drywall, and treat the AC system. The final, critical step is a post-remediation verification test from an independent lab to confirm the spore count has returned to a normal level.

Costs for professional remediation vary significantly based on the extent of the damage and the required containment. You should request an on-site inspection from a provider with IICRC-certified technicians to get an accurate assessment and scope of work.
