AC leaking and black spots: need mold inspection now?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a little onto the carpet for maybe a couple of weeks, and now I'm seeing a few small black spots spreading out from the corner. I keep wiping it away but it comes back, and my allergies have been going crazy since this started. Given how humid it is here, is this something I need to get a professional mold inspection for immediately, or can it wait until next week?

That black spot recurrence and your allergy flare-up are strong indicators of active mold growth. In Dubai's high humidity, a damp carpet from an AC leak creates an ideal environment for mold colonies to establish in as little as 48-72 hours. The fact it returns after wiping confirms it's growing within the carpet fibers or backing, not just on the surface.
You should arrange a professional inspection promptly. The immediate risk is to your health; continuous exposure to the spores being released into your bedroom air is the direct cause of your worsening allergies. In serious cases, this can progress to respiratory irritation or sinus infections. The secondary risk is property damage, as the mold can spread to the wall and subfloor. While you wait, stop wiping the area, as this disturbs and spreads the spores. Instead, place a dry towel over the spot to absorb further dripping and isolate it if possible. Keep the room well-ventilated. A proper inspection involves more than a visual check; it includes moisture mapping with specialized equipment to find the full extent of the water spread and ideally, air or surface sampling to identify the mold type. This data is crucial for planning an effective remediation, as simply cleaning the visible spot is never sufficient. For a confirmed leak and active growth, addressing it this week is strongly advised over waiting. |
