Can black mold in Dubai cause my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and I've just discovered a patch of black mold behind the wardrobe in their bedroom, probably from all the humidity. We’re in a villa in Jumeirah and I’m really worried about their health. What’s the best way to handle this safely and permanently—should I attempt to clean it myself or is there a certified company in Dubai I should call for something like this?

It can, yes. Black mold, particularly Stachybotrys chartarum, produces mycotoxins that are known irritants and can trigger respiratory symptoms like persistent coughing, especially in children. The high humidity in Dubai, combined with air conditioning that can create condensation in wall cavities, creates ideal conditions for this type of mold growth behind furniture.

For a discovered patch, the first step is to isolate the area. Keep the children out of the room and avoid disturbing the mold, as this can release more spores into the air. Do not attempt to clean it with bleach yourself; improper remediation can spread the contamination throughout your villa.

The best course is a professional inspection. A certified mold assessor can determine the extent of the problem, often using moisture meters and borescopes to check inside walls. In many Jumeirah villas, a leak from an AC condensation line or a minor plumbing issue is the hidden source. True remediation involves fixing the moisture source, containing the area, removing contaminated materials like drywall or insulation, and using HEPA filtration to clean the air. You would want a company that provides before-and-after lab testing to verify the spore count in the room has returned to a normal level. This is the only way to ensure it is handled permanently and your children's health is protected.
