Should I take my child to a doctor for mold exposure?« Back to Previous Page

Our apartment in Jumeirah Lakes Towers has been so humid lately. I finally pulled out the guest room sofa bed that we never use and found a bunch of black and greenish mold all over the wall behind it and the back of the mattress. My youngest has had a runny nose and a cough for over a week now and I’m starting to panic. What are the health risks here and should I take him to a doctor immediately?

Yes, you should have your child evaluated by a doctor given the symptoms and the discovery of significant mold growth. The persistent runny nose and cough are common reactions to mold exposure, which acts as a powerful irritant to the respiratory system. This is especially important for children, whose systems are more sensitive.
The health risks depend on the mold species and the individual's sensitivity. The black and greenish growth you describe could be common molds like Cladosporium or Aspergillus, which typically cause allergic symptoms—sneezing, coughing, itchy eyes, and skin irritation. In more susceptible individuals, particularly those with asthma or compromised immunity, exposure can trigger more severe reactions. The constant humidity in JLT apartments, combined with poor air circulation behind large furniture, creates a perfect environment for this rapid growth. For now, restrict access to that room and avoid disturbing the mold, as this can release spores into the air. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can aggravate the situation. Your priority is identifying the moisture source; it's likely condensation from the external wall or a hidden leak. A professional inspection is crucial to assess the extent of the problem, identify the species, and properly remediate the source. In Dubai's climate, simply wiping it away is never a permanent solution. A proper assessment will include moisture mapping and air quality testing to ensure the environment is returned to a healthy state. |
