Is black mold in my closet causing sinus issues?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, on the inside wall facing the sea in our Jumeirah villa, has felt damp for the last few months. I started getting terrible sinus headaches and a constant stuffy nose, and when I finally pulled all the shoes out, I found a bunch of black speckles spreading up the back wall. Is this black mold, and could it be the reason I’ve been feeling so unwell?

Black mold in a damp closet is a very likely cause of your sinus headaches and congestion, especially in a seaside Jumeirah villa. The constant high humidity, combined with an interior wall that may be cooler from AC, creates a perfect environment for mold growth through condensation.

In Dubai's climate, the type is often Aspergillus or Cladosporium, which are known to cause the exact respiratory symptoms you describe. It is not advisable to attempt cleaning this yourself, as disturbing it can release a high concentration of spores and potentially make your reaction worse.

For a situation like this, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. A certified inspector can safely take a sample for lab analysis to confirm the species and its concentration, which is the only way to know the specific health risk and guide the correct remediation protocol. They will also identify the precise moisture source—whether it's condensation, a hidden leak, or rising damp—which is critical to preventing its return after cleanup.

Until it can be assessed, keep the closet door closed and the room well-ventilated. Running a dehumidifier in the bedroom can help temporarily reduce the ambient moisture that the mold is feeding on.
