How to remove and prevent mold on villa walls and curtains?« Back to Previous Page

Our family villa in Al Barsha has been great, but after the recent humidity, we found black mold spots on the back of our bedroom curtains and along the bottom of the wall. The room feels damp even with the AC running constantly. What’s the most effective way to treat this and prevent it from coming back next season, especially with the fabric of the curtains?

Mold on walls and curtains in a Dubai villa is a common issue driven by high humidity and condensation from AC units. For the curtains, machine washing with a mold-killing additive at a high temperature (if the fabric allows) is the first step. If the mold has penetrated deeply, professional dry cleaning with specific antimicrobial treatment is often necessary to prevent spore release and regrowth.
For the wall, scrub the affected area with a solution of detergent and water. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the color and does not kill the roots. The key is to dry the area completely immediately after cleaning; use dehumidifiers and fans to achieve this. Painting over mold without proper remediation will cause it to return quickly. Prevention is critical in our climate. Your AC running constantly might be contributing by creating a significant temperature differential that leads to condensation. Ensure your AC unit is serviced and the drain lines are unclogged to remove excess moisture. Use a dehumidifier in the room, especially during the more humid months, to keep relative humidity below 60%. Improve air circulation by periodically opening windows when the outside humidity is lower and using ceiling fans. For walls, consider applying an antimicrobial primer before repainting to inhibit future growth. If the mold covers a large area (more than one square meter) or you suspect it's inside the wall cavity due to a persistent damp feeling, a professional inspection is advised. They can identify the moisture source—which could be a small leak, rising damp, or insufficient insulation—and perform remediation that includes containment and air scrubbing to prevent cross-contamination, followed by verification testing to confirm the space is truly clean. |
