I've been dealing with mold in my Dubai apartment for a few weeks now. Has anyone else experienced this? Looking for advice on what steps to take.

Mold in Dubai apartments is extremely common due to our high humidity and year-round AC use. The AC's cold coils create condensation, providing the perfect damp environment for mold to grow, which then gets circulated throughout your home.
Start by identifying and addressing the moisture source. Check for leaky pipes, window seals, or AC drain pan overflow. For surface mold on walls, a solution of white vinegar or diluted bleach can be effective for cleaning, but always wear a mask and gloves. Ensure your apartment is well-ventilated; open windows when the outside humidity is lower, typically early morning or evening. Using a dehumidifier, especially during the more humid summer months, can significantly help control ambient moisture. However, if the mold covers a large area (generally more than one square meter), keeps returning after cleaning, or you notice a persistent musty odor, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Visible mold is often just the tip of the iceberg, and it can grow inside wall cavities or AC ductwork. A proper assessment involves moisture mapping and often air or surface sampling sent to a microbiology lab to identify the spore types and concentrations, which dictates the correct remediation method. This is crucial for health, as some species common here can cause more than just allergy symptoms. The Dubai Municipality has guidelines for healthy housing, and landlords are typically responsible for resolving issues related to building envelope leaks or faulty AC systems. Document everything with photos and communicate with your property management company in writing. For extensive problems, a certified remediation company will use containment, HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial treatments to resolve it safely. |
