Is htis mold an emergency for my kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks now, and I've just found a patch of black and greenish stuff behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom, which is always cold from the AC. We're in an older building in Jumeirah and I'm starting to panic about their health. How quickly do I need to get a professional mold inspection here, is this a full-blown emergency?

This situation warrants prompt professional attention, but is not typically a medical emergency requiring an ambulance. The persistent cough in children, combined with visible mould growth in a high-moisture area like a cold wall behind furniture, strongly indicates that indoor air quality is a likely contributing factor.

In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue. Constant AC use creates significant temperature differentials between cold surfaces and the humid air, leading to condensation—the primary cause of mould growth in bedrooms and behind wardrobes. Older buildings in coastal areas like Jumeirah are particularly susceptible due to potential moisture ingress and aged building envelopes.

You should arrange a certified mould inspection within the next few days. A proper inspection involves more than just looking at the visible patch; it includes using a moisture meter to detect dampness inside the wall and an air quality test to identify the types and concentrations of spores circulating in your bedroom's air. This is crucial because the visible growth is often just the tip of the iceberg, and the spores affecting your children's lungs are airborne.

Until the inspector arrives, restrict your children's access to the room and avoid disturbing the mould yourself, as this can release a large number of spores. Keep the AC running to maintain a stable temperature and reduce humidity, but be prepared for the technician to likely recommend a full system cleaning if the indoor unit is found to be contaminated. The key is to get a science-based diagnosis through air and surface sampling to understand the exact scope of the problem before any remediation begins.
