How to permanently remove bathroom mold causing child's cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold growing in our master bathroom. We're in an older building in Deira and the bathroom doesn't have a window, so after every shower the humidity just sits there for hours. I've tried wiping it down, but it keeps coming back in the grout between the tiles. What's the most effective way to get rid of this for good and is it likely causing their respiratory issues?

Bathroom mold in Dubai's humid climate, especially in windowless bathrooms, is a common trigger for respiratory irritation like coughing in children. The persistent humidity after showers creates ideal conditions for mold regrowth, particularly in porous grout.

For immediate cleaning, use a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to one part water, applied directly to the mold. Let it sit for an hour before scrubbing with a stiff brush. Avoid bleach, as it only removes surface discoloration and does not kill the root structure in porous materials, leading to rapid regrowth.

The only permanent solution is to control the humidity. Run the bathroom's exhaust fan for at least 30-60 minutes after every shower. If you don't have one, installing a powerful fan is crucial. Wipe down all wet surfaces—tiles, walls, glass—with a squeegee immediately after use to remove standing water. For severe, recurring cases in older Deira buildings, the mold may have penetrated behind the tiles, requiring professional assessment and remediation to address the hidden source.

Given the child's cough, a professional inspection is advisable. They can identify the specific mold type and the full extent of the problem, which is often beyond surface level. Remediation typically involves antimicrobial treatment of the grout and, more importantly, implementing lasting moisture control solutions to prevent its return.
