Black shower grout and smell: urgent professional needed?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom’s grout in the shower has started turning black in the corners, and there’s a really strong damp smell that hits you as soon as you walk in. It’s the ensuite in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle, and it’s gotten a lot worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. Is this something I need to get a professional to handle urgently, or can I tackle it myself with a good cleaner?

That black discoloration and damp smell are classic signs of active mould growth, directly fueled by Dubai's high humidity. While surface-level mould on grout can sometimes be a DIY project, the strong odour suggests a deeper issue that likely requires professional assessment.

For immediate action, increase ventilation by running your bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after showering and keep the door open. Wipe down wet surfaces on walls and the shower screen to remove standing moisture. You can attempt to clean the visible grout mould with a dedicated grout cleaner or a paste of baking soda and vinegar, but this only addresses the surface.

The persistent smell is the critical indicator. It often means mould is growing behind the tiles, under the grout, or within the wall cavity itself—places you cannot reach with a surface cleaner. In an apartment, hidden leaks from adjacent units or plumbing can also be a source of constant moisture. A professional inspection uses moisture meters and borescopes to identify these hidden reservoirs. Without addressing the underlying moisture source, the mould will return quickly, often within weeks.

Given your location in JVC and the recent humidity spike, a professional assessment is strongly advised to prevent structural damage and potential health effects from prolonged spore exposure. Look for a provider that can diagnose the moisture source and provide documented, post-remediation verification to confirm the issue is resolved.
