What's the safest way to clean mold near my toddler?« Back to Previous Page

Our building had a minor leak in the kitchen a couple of months ago that the maintenance fixed, but I just pulled out the refrigerator and found a patch of black, fuzzy mold on the wall behind it. My toddler is always playing on the floor in here and has had a runny nose and cough that won't go away. What's the safest way for me to clean this myself without putting my family at risk?

For a small patch under 1 square foot, you can clean it yourself safely. First, keep your toddler and family out of the kitchen and close the door. Open a window for ventilation if possible.

Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle. Avoid using bleach, as it only removes the colour and can release harmful fumes, especially in a poorly ventilated space. Spray the moldy area thoroughly and let it sit for an hour to disinfect. Then, scrub the area with a stiff brush and wipe it clean with disposable cloths. Place all used cleaning materials in a sealed bag before disposing.

The high humidity in Dubai means the wall is likely still damp inside, which is why the mold grew. After cleaning, it is critical to dry the wall completely. Use a fan or a dehumidifier pointed at the area for at least 24-48 hours to prevent immediate regrowth.

Given that your toddler has persistent respiratory symptoms, the mold behind the fridge may not be the only source. Spores can travel through the AC system. For health concerns with a young child, a professional inspection is wise to rule out hidden growth inside the wall or elsewhere. They can use moisture meters to find residual dampness and air testing to identify spore types and concentrations, which is the only way to confirm if the environment is truly safe.
