DIY or professional for master bedroom closet mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It's been really humid lately and the musty smell is starting to spread into the room. I'm tempted to just scrub it with bleach myself, but my wife is worried it's a bigger issue behind the walls. Is this a DIY job or do we need to call a professional mold inspection company in Dubai?

Given the location on an interior wall and the spreading musty smell, this is almost certainly a professional job. Bleach will only remove surface discoloration and does not address the moisture source or the hyphae (roots) growing within the porous wall material. The high humidity we experience in Dubai, especially during summer and the recent foggy periods, creates ideal conditions for mould to thrive inside wall cavities where condensation can accumulate from cold AC pipes or unseen leaks.

A professional inspection is critical here. They will use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to locate the exact source of the moisture behind that wall without unnecessary demolition. The goal is to identify if this is due to a plumbing leak, condensation from an AC duct, or vapour drive from the humid outdoor air. Scrubbing it yourself risks disturbing a large colony and releasing a significant number of spores into your bedroom air.

For a situation like this, a proper inspection involves taking air and surface samples for lab analysis to identify the mould species. This step is important for determining the appropriate remediation protocol, especially since the mould is in a living area. While DIY kits are available, their reliability is questionable, and they lack the professional interpretation of results that dictates the correct containment and removal methods.

Given the potential for hidden growth, I would recommend getting a professional assessment. A certified inspector will provide a detailed protocol for remediation, which any reputable cleanup company should then follow to ensure it is handled safely and effectively.
