Should we hire a pro for black mold near baby's room?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of fuzzy black mold spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It’s gotten worse since I first spotted it a couple of weeks ago, and my husband thinks we can just wipe it down with bleach ourselves. I’m worried it’s more serious, especially with our baby sleeping in the next room. Should we call a professional company to handle this, or is this a safe DIY job?

Black mold growth in a bedroom closet on an interior wall, especially with a baby nearby, warrants a professional assessment. The fact it's spreading quickly indicates an active moisture source, which simple surface wiping won't resolve. In Dubai's climate, this is often due to condensation from AC ducts running inside the wall or a hidden leak.

Bleach is not an effective solution for porous surfaces like drywall or plaster. It may bleach the visible growth but leaves the root structure intact, leading to rapid regrowth. More importantly, disturbing the mold by scrubbing can release a high concentration of spores into the air, potentially affecting the air quality in your bedroom and your baby's room.

For a situation involving rapid spread and proximity to an infant's sleeping area, a professional inspection is strongly advised. A certified inspector will use moisture meters and thermal cameras to locate the hidden water source—this is the critical first step. They can also take an air sample from the baby's room for peace of mind. Remediation for a contained area like a closet is typically a controlled process involving sealing the area, safe removal of affected materials, and HEPA vacuuming to capture spores, followed by verifying the space is clean with post-remediation testing. This diagnostic approach ensures the problem is solved at its root.
