Should I DIY or hire a pro for bathroom mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black mold spots appearing on the ceiling above our shower in Silicon Oasis. I tried wiping it with a bleach spray, but it came back darker a few weeks later, and now the room always feels damp. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company here in Dubai?

That persistent black mold in your Silicon Oasis bathroom is a classic Dubai issue, primarily driven by the high humidity and condensation from showers mixing with cooler AC-chilled surfaces. Bleach often fails because it only removes surface discoloration, not the root structure penetrating porous materials like ceiling paint or grout. Its water content can even feed the mold deeper inside, causing a quicker, darker return.

For a small, isolated spot, a targeted DIY approach can work. Use a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner, not bleach, and ensure you’re scrubbing the area thoroughly while wearing an N95 mask and gloves. Crucially, you must address the moisture source. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and consider a squeegee routine on the walls to remove standing water. A dehumidifier can also help significantly.

However, since you mention the mold has returned darker and the room consistently feels damp, this suggests a more entrenched problem. The persistent dampness could indicate a ventilation issue with your extractor fan or, more seriously, a potential leak from the apartment above or within the ceiling void that is providing a constant moisture source. In such cases, wiping the surface is a temporary fix.

For recurring or widespread mold, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They can identify the exact species (some are more problematic than others) and, most importantly, locate the hidden moisture source that’s feeding it. Proper remediation involves containing the area, safely removing contaminated porous materials, and applying antimicrobial solutions to prevent regrowth. The goal is to solve the problem permanently, not just clean what’s visible.
