How to clean and stop AC mold in my bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom’s AC unit has been leaking a bit of water onto the carpet below for a couple of weeks, and now I’m starting to see a few black spots forming in the corner. It's on the wall behind my headboard in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle, and I'm worried it's mold. What’s the best way to clean this myself and stop it from coming back for good?

A water leak from your AC unit in JVC creates the perfect conditions for mold, especially with our high humidity. Those black spots are almost certainly mold. For a small area, you can clean it yourself, but the priority is stopping the leak to prevent it from returning.

First, address the source. The leak is likely a clogged condensate drain line, a very common issue here due to dust and year-round AC use. Turn off the AC unit at the circuit breaker. You can try flushing the drain line with a mixture of warm water and white vinegar to clear the blockage. If that doesn't stop the drip, you'll need an HVAC technician to properly clear and service the line.

For the mold on the wall, wear an N95 mask and gloves. For non-porous surfaces like the AC unit or wall, a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product can be effective. Scrub the visible mold away. For the carpet, the porous nature of the fibers makes complete DIY removal difficult. If the staining and moisture have penetrated the carpet pad beneath, professional cleaning or replacement is often necessary to truly resolve it.

However, what you see on the surface is often just a fraction of the growth. Mold can spread inside the wall cavity behind the headboard. If the area is larger than a square foot, the leak persists after your attempt to clear it, or you or family members experience ongoing allergies or respiratory irritation, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and borescopes to assess hidden damage and can provide lab analysis to identify the mold species, which is crucial for understanding any potential health risks and ensuring the remediation is complete.
