How to remove and prevent black mold on wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a line of black speckles growing along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. I'm guessing it's from condensation from the AC unit, as it's the coldest wall in our Jumeirah Park villa. What's the best way to clean this off and prevent it from coming back for good?

That black speckled line is a classic sign of condensation-related mold, very common in Dubai villas. The wall is cold from the AC, and when humid outdoor air contacts it, moisture condenses, creating the perfect damp environment for mold to grow.
For cleaning, first identify the wall surface. For non-porous surfaces like painted drywall or glass, a solution of white vinegar and water (1:1 ratio) is effective. Apply it, let it sit for an hour, then scrub and wipe dry. For porous surfaces like concrete or unfinished brick, the mold may have penetrated deeper, making complete DIY removal difficult. Always wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning to avoid inhaling spores. Prevention is the only way to stop it from returning permanently. You need to address the condensation point. First, ensure your AC is not set excessively low; a very cold setting increases the temperature differential and condensation risk. Second, improve air circulation around that cold wall; even a small fan can help. Third, consider having your AC unit serviced to check its drainage and ensure it's dehumidifying the air properly, as it should. For a recurring issue or a large area (over one square meter), a professional inspection is recommended to assess the wall's moisture content and identify any hidden problems. In many cases, applying a specialist anti-condensation or mold-resistant paint after a thorough cleaning provides a long-term barrier. |
