What is the best local product to kill bathroom mold?« Back to Previous Page

Our family bathroom in our villa in Mirdif has had this musty smell for weeks, but today I finally found black and greenish mold spreading behind the toilet and in the grout between the floor tiles. It's been so humid lately, even with the AC running constantly. What is the most effective and safe product I can find locally to kill this mold and stop it from coming back?

The most effective locally available products are chlorine-based mold and mildew removers, widely found at Ace Hardware, Carrefour, or Union Coop. Look for a spray containing sodium hypochlorite; it's highly effective at killing surface mold on non-porous tiles and grout. For a more natural alternative, concentrated vinegar (over 6% acidity) can work on lighter infestations, but it requires longer contact time.
However, these products only address the visible growth. The musty smell indicates a persistent humidity issue. In Dubai's climate, with AC constantly battling outdoor humidity, bathrooms are prime for condensation. Mold behind the toilet suggests hidden moisture, possibly from a tiny leak in the water connection or from condensation dripping from the tank. Simply spraying the surface will not stop it from returning if the underlying moisture source isn't fixed. For a lasting solution, first fix any leaks and run an exhaust fan during and for 30 minutes after showers. Improve air circulation by occasionally leaving the bathroom door open. For the existing growth, scrub with the mold remover, ensuring the area is well-ventilated. Wear an N95 mask and gloves to avoid inhaling spores. If the mold covers a large area (generally over one square meter), has a persistent musty odor despite cleaning, or you suspect hidden growth inside the wall, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters to find the source and, if needed, conduct air or surface sampling to identify the mold type, which guides the correct remediation method. |
