Is the mold in my Dubai apartment making us sick?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing constantly for the last month and my own allergies have been awful, and I’m starting to suspect it’s our apartment. We live in a high-humidity area in Jumeirah, and I just found what looks like black spots in the back of the bedroom wardrobe. Could this be making us sick and what’s the proper way to get a mold inspection done in Dubai?

Persistent coughing and worsened allergies in a humid Jumeirah apartment, especially with visible black spots, strongly suggest a mold-related issue. The type commonly found in wardrobes and on walls here is often Cladosporium, which is a known allergen and respiratory irritant.

Dubai's high humidity, especially near the coast, creates ideal conditions for mold growth in poorly ventilated spaces like behind wardrobes and inside AC units. The constant use of air conditioning can spread spores throughout your living space, exacerbating symptoms. For vulnerable individuals like children, this exposure can lead to chronic respiratory issues.

A proper inspection in Dubai involves more than a visual check. A certified inspector should conduct a thorough assessment of the apartment's humidity levels, identify all contamination sources (including inside the AC system), and most importantly, take air and surface samples for analysis at an accredited microbiology lab. This lab culture is the only way to definitively identify the mold species and its concentration, which determines the health risk and required remediation protocol.

Do not attempt to clean significant growth yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize spores and worsen the problem. For a case involving health symptoms and visible growth, a professional inspection with lab verification is the necessary first step to identifying the cause and formulating a safe, effective removal plan.
