Mold in closet: DIY fix or professional needed?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bedroom closet on the outside wall has started showing black spots, and I’m pretty sure it’s mold, especially after all that humidity we had last month. I tried wiping it down with vinegar, but it came back within a week. Is this something I can tackle myself with stronger stuff from ACE Hardware, or do I need to call in a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

That's a classic Dubai problem, especially after a humid spell. The humidity we get, combined with year-round AC use creating temperature differentials, leads to condensation on cooler exterior walls—the perfect environment for mold.
Vinegar often fails because it only tackles surface mold and doesn't address the moisture source or the hyphae (roots) growing into porous materials like drywall or the closet's backing board. If it returned within a week, the moisture issue is still active and the mold is established. For a small area (under one square meter), a thorough DIY approach can be attempted. Use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner from a hardware store, not bleach, as it only discolors mold and can exacerbate moisture. You must scrub and fully remove the discoloration, not just wipe it. Crucially, identify and eliminate the moisture source. Check for AC condensation drain line leaks near that wall, insufficient insulation, or a sealant failure allowing humid outdoor air to penetrate. If the area is larger, the mold returns after a proper DIY attempt, or you discover significant hidden moisture, professional assessment is needed. Remediation here involves containment to prevent spore spread, HEPA vacuuming, and often removing and replacing the affected porous material. Professionals use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden water entry point, which is the only way to guarantee a permanent fix. In many villa communities, proper remediation also requires documentation for property management. A certified inspector can provide a verified clearance test to confirm the space is truly resolved. |
